8 in 10 people are smartphone shoppers; Is your marketing campaign ready for that?
Or
8 out of 10 people rely on their phones for shopping; Are marketers aware?
Or
8 out of 10 people can’t shop without their phones. Is that good or bad for marketers?

Mobile shoppers are set to become the most critical segment of consumers in the near future. Are marketers prepared for m-commerce?

Mobile shoppers have evolved into ‘anytime shoppers.’ At present, 8 in 10 smartphone users are shopping on-the-go, while 3 in 5 consumers are using their smartphones to assist with shopping. Clearly we are witnessing an explosion of people relying on their mobile devices to help them with their pre-purchase research and final decision making. This sub-category of online shoppers (mobile buyers) has become the most important consumer category for businesses associated with apparel, footwear and electronics.

1

Traditionally speaking, most brand marketing campaigns, including television commercials and print ads were directed at the in-store buyers, whereas mobile consumers were considered somewhat more of a surplus base that is small and not incredibly relevant. However, the wind of change has turned the entire buyer-market scene around, and mobile buyers are suddenly as important as the in-store buyers, if not more. Modern marketers are tapping into this gap by rolling out extensive mobile-optimized marketing campaigns, since the line between in-store and mobile buyers is diminishing rapidly.

2

Companies who are doing it right

Mobile marketing campaigns aren’t just about sending mobile-optimized mailers, creating mobile apps replete with the maximum amount of information about a product or in-app advertisement. It is not that these things are not important; of course they are, but print and visual media can serve the same purpose as well, if done correctly.

Amazon for instance has a brilliant digital campaign that is working for its mobile buyer, even if they have no role play to cater to in-store consumers. Like Amazon and eBay, most e-commerce players were the first to seriously consider m-commerce, and were successful in rolling out authentic mobile campaigns that earned them some serious revenue. Further, McDonald’s, Quiznos and Taco Bell are the front-runners among fast-food chains organizing comprehensive marketing campaigns and getting some mean business.

Mobile marketing has witnessed many innovative campaigns by some big brands from Nike and Ikea to the German automotive marque Audi. Nike’s iOS running app campaign struck the right chords with its advocates and the central idea was something everybody easily identified with the brand. On the flip side, Ikea opted for an entirely radical approach – augmented reality. Their m-commerce campaign has a mobile app that allowed customers to virtually pick their spot and place furniture in their home. Audi epitomized their efficiency by rolling out the Start-Stop mobile app that helped users in saving their battery juice. Evidently, there are lots of innovations possible; you just need to find one that caters to your target audience and business the best!

Smartphones aren’t going anywhere, so is mobile marketing

Mobile shoppers are being called anytime shoppers for a reason – their behavior. Most buyers are increasingly relying on their smart devices for product reviews, checking for competitor pricing and general buyer sentiment around a certain product. Interestingly, self help is becoming the new norm with1 in 3 shoppers using their smartphones to ?nd information regarding a product, instead of asking store employees. It has now become imperative for businesses to ensue modern mobile-optimized brand campaigns with immediate effect, since their revenue will grow if their mobile buyers increase in number.

3

Reach customers directly and hit the right sentiments

??

Mobile advertising is flexible and can bring some some exciting numbers of more buyers and leads. For starters, Christmas holidays are usually the time when we witness the year’s highest sales. Further, all marketing channels including signage, print or visual media are the most aggressive around holidays. Now imagine, what mobile campaigns could accomplish if they are directed strategically to the buyers interested in smartphones and cool applications. If you push your brand through mobile advertising and in-app ads during holidays and point your products directly at buyers, then there’s a little chance of failure, provided the campaign clicks well.

People love window shopping on their phones

The time is coming when mobile buyers will predominate digital buyers, and the best guess would be in the near future, may be the next couple of years. M-commerce thrives on consumer interaction, and if the website is mobile-ready and responsive, chances of a positive engagement are enhanced considerably. Here’s an interesting video about understanding smartphone consumers, which talks about nuances and insights about mobile marketers’ behavior.

4

9 in 10 smartphone shoppers are using their smartphones for pre-shopping activities, be it for finding store location, opening/closing hours or making price comparisons. This is a very troubling study for those who don’t have a decent mobile-ready m-commerce website. Responsive web design creates an effective web experience on every device and screen size, which positively effects lead-to-sale conversion.

5

Sales team gets smarter with smartphones

If you own a brick and mortar store, then having a smart sales team equipped with tablets is a great idea. The customers are getting smarter every day, and having an inefficient team with limited information won’t help you in obtaining that fawned upon customer trust. It is not easy to outsmart buyers, since they have become more aggressive, have started asking more questions and are more interested in comparing different competitor prices.

As per a study by Marketing Land, as much as 77% of smartphones driven retail purchases take place in stores. This has added more traction towards deploying a tech savvy sales team equipped with iPads and answering all customer queries and sharing product reviews. And this direct interaction between buyer and seller is a major component of mobile marketing, which also effectively gauges real-time consumer buying sentiments.

There are a few things you need to do correctly when building a website. First of all, you have to determine: what is the purpose of the site?
Are you:

  • selling a product
  • offering a service
  • blogging to communicate or educate
  • driving traffic to a physical location
  • collecting customer data in order to sell them something by phone

The second most important element is to build your design around the message you want to convey. Designers build a site with the proper message through strong communication between the client and an Internet Marketing specialist. The specialist’s role is critical in identifying?all the important information about the client’s business and goals. It is suggested to use a list of questions that ask several important things about the client’s business.

Some important questions to ask:

  • What is your target demographic?
  • How many pages does your site need?
  • Do you have a site map or an outline of the tabs/pages needed?
  • What’s the flow of the site? (rate the content from the most to least important)
  • Do you have logos, photos or videos we can use?
  • What colors do you like and work well with your industry?
  • What specific requests do you have? (ie. Do not use green. I like red, white and blue. Add a picture with a lady and dog)
    • The more specific you are the better chance you have of building a great site.

These details will help the client and the designer get the design and functionality of the site correct. Another helpful technique is to search the web and look for different websites that appeal to you. Provide at least three different website addresses (URL) that show the design and functionality you like and need. It is also helpful to look at what your competition has online, so you do not duplicate colors and/or content. Your website should be a unique representation of both your business and industry.

There are several items that are “must haves” on your home page.
They include:

  • The business name, phone number, address and company logo
  • Social logos to the sites you interact with (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube are some examples)
  • A way to contact the business: usually through a contact form
  • Also included on some sites: RSS feeds, blog link

It is suggested to keep all graphics and contact information consistent across all platforms to build your brand.

Your website’s content and design will have a tremendous impact on how your potential customers will perceive your business.

If you’re planning on making changes to the content, (adding photos or articles) you will need to consider what platform to build your website on. Joomla and WordPress are two of the more popular CMS (content management systems), although some web companies can also create a custom CMS. These platforms are very user friendly and make it easy for the site owner to make their own changes without contacting a web designer.

The other option is HTML or another web programming language (php). These platforms allow for very custom and dynamic sites, but all changes need to be done by a professional web designer. This is usually an additional monthly maintenance fee.

One word of caution: the business owner should always purchase the domain name and then allow the web company to make necessary changes for hosting. You should not allow anyone else to purchase the domain name for you because they can unintentionally (or even intentionally) register the Domain Name under their web company’s name. If this happens, the domain name is not your property and the web company may try to charge you an additional fee for transfer of ownership.

The last and most important aspect of building a successful website is known as On-Page Optimization. Make sure you have a solid meta description and title tags on each page. This allows all major search engines to crawl your site. If you want your potential customers to find you online it’s very important to include your targeted keywords on all the pages within your site.

Don’t forget to do your research. Building a website doesn’t need to be a hassle. Follow these simple principles and success is just a click away!

Pinterest?is the new kid on the block in the social media world. People are flocking to?Pinterest because of its unique twist of being highly visual and inspirational. This social network does a great job of combining the 2 factors that make social media so addicting, being highly visual while sharing with the world who you are. This network is still in the invite only stage but you are able to request an invite or log in with a Facebook or twitter account.

This sounds great but how do I use this to promote my business or help with Local SEO? Pinterest is not a resource for all industries.?Pinterest can best be leveraged for brands and industries that are visually appealing, restaurants, bakeries, retail, home decor and remodeling for example. To get the benefits of pintrest you will want to have pictures and content that is visually appealing and can inspire people. With that it is a great way to get noticed, build advocacy for your brand or business, and build links. One of the many great features of?Pinterest for SEO is the fact that they do not use No Follow links. This can help with rankings when?Pinterest is used properly.

When setting up your profile it is important to make your company profile public. Put effort into your about description, use keywords and make it interesting to read. Add links to your website, Twitter and Facebook pages to your?Pinterest profile.? When creating your boards, make a board for your geographic location, make sure to use the city name in the title of your board,? and a board for your product or services. Post interesting pictures of landmarks in your city and your storefront of your business. Begin following other?Pinterest users that have areas of interest similar to yours.? When “pinning” photos to your boards, only select visually appealing photos. When adding pictures to your geographic location board, use descriptive keywords for the name. Design an infographic for your business to promote on Pinterest.

You will also want to promote your?Pinterest profile. Add the?Pinterest logo to your website with your other social media logos and links. Get a “pin it” button placed on your products page or services page to encourage website visitors to pin your products creating links to your site. Get your employees on board by suggesting they create?Pinterest profiles and encourage them to promote your company boards as well as promote their knowledge and expertise in the industry.

Happy Pinning!

I believe 2012 will be a very exciting year, especially in the SEO landscape. I think there will be a lot of great things to come for white-hat SEO’s in the world of search. My top 5 predictions in regards to SEO for 2012 are:

1. Google + will play a major role in SEO.

For Marketers this will have an unequivocal effect? for marketers that do SEO and Social Media successfully. Use of Google’s social network will be able to tie rankings factors and social media together like never before, albeit decreasing manipulation and spam.

2. SEO and Social Media will depend upon each other.

Successful SEO campaigns with out social media will become part of the past. Social Media factors are becoming more prevalent in the search engines ranking algorithms but more importantly Social Media is the primary way people are sharing and discovering information.

3. Google will crack down on devious link spam.

I predict Google will roll out a panda-esque attack on link spam in the coming year from their search quality team. We will begin to see Google’s algorithm depreciate the value of less respectable links to give users more quality search results.

4. Pintrest.com will be the next social network to watch for attracting new customers.

I believe this new social network has some great potential for marketers. People use Pintrest to find inspiration for their purchasing decisions. Finding a way to leverage this to share information about your business and attract potential customers will be beneficial to many business, small and large.

5. Search Advertising will become more prevalent. ?

We will be seeing more and more emphasis on paid search ads in Google. Which will push organic results further down the page. The most shocking new feature is Google’s capability to pre-populate a logged in users email into a submit form with in a PPC ad. These types of ad’s are seldom but we predict we will be seeing more of them in the coming year.

Twas the night…

Ok we are over the elves, reindeer’s & sleighs. Now its time to look ahead to 2012 Internet Marketing Trends.

More specifically how will the current internet marketing trends effect your business in 2012.? What steps can you take to get ahead of the competition and more importantly how can these internet marketing trends improve your current user experience.

Getting Ahead of the Competition

With todays current Local Internet Landscape the opportunities seem plentiful but there are many pitfalls to look out for as well.? Lets take a look at some of the exiting opportunities businesses have to separate themselves from the competition and individualize there local web presence.

Web Design 2.0 if you do not have an updated web design in the last 24 months it will be a good idea to do that in 2012.? A survey done by web visible indicates that 84% of people surveyed believe the quality of a website directly relates to the quality of a business.? Aspects of a website clients are interested in are, professional design, easy navigation to guide a users experience, interactive media like video feeds & links to your social media pages, and don’t forget to make an offer it is the easiest way for your customers to go from shopping to buying from you.

Social Media Integration was a high trend in 2011 and I believe it will remain as important if not even more important.? As business owners have begun to realize the importance of social media many have still not taken the time to integrate there clients experience through the social channels.? First of all,? business today should have a custom welcome page on Facebook that describes the social experience that you are trying to create.? If it is to be highly informative, lets say for an accountant, continuing to update your client base on important dates as well as need to know changes would be highly successful.? It can also be offer driven, “like us on Facebook and win a chance at a free gift card to your restaurant of choice.? I would say 2011 was big for businesses getting on Facebook, but 2012 will be dedicated to figuring out how to use it for your business.

Interactive Media is becoming larger and larger and in 2012 the big have for local businesses will be to a custom Youtube channel with videos that link to and from your websites.? Good video ideas should be based around helping your client base, such as how to’s that describe how to get the most out of your services.

The big pitfall to look out for in 2012.? Mobile marketing for local businesses.? I believe this will be a big trend in 2013, however in 2012 there still are questions on how to target mobile local clients.? Stay tuned as this technology develops I believe it will become more important to business owners than the actual local web is.? What you can do with mobile in the meantime is get a mobile website.? A mobile website is designed to create an easy user navigation that fits in their mobile browsers.? This will certainly increase your clients user experience.? However as far as truly successful mobile marketing strategies go they are in development and your clients will determine which platforms are successful by their usage.? If you are going to invest in mobile strategies in 2012 I would recommend stating with a low budget until this technology if proven by trackable results.

Happy New Year to all.? Next Month I will dive into improving your clients user experiences.

Duplicate listings can cause major havoc on your rankings in the maps in google places. If you have discovered there are duplicate listings for your business on Google places there is a way to correct these listings by merging them. Follow these suggested steps to remove the duplicate listings.

Decide which listing you want to keep in your account, the listing you currently have control of or the duplicate listing you have discovered. In most cases the advised option is to keep the listing you currently have control of and have been optimizing. However there are a few instances in which you will want to use the duplicate listing. Perform a local search within Google Places for your company name and see which business listing Google places first.? The first matching listing is the stronger source for your business.? Once you have decided make sure that you have made this listing 100% complete with descriptions, photos, business hours, categories, additional details and offers. This is also referred to as the enhanced content. If using the listing you currently have control over that should all be done already. Next find the duplicate listing or listings, click on owner verified, log in with the google account you have your current listing in, then begin claiming this listing. Remove any enhanced content that is present in the listing. The only fields that should have information present are the required fields with asterisks, Business name, telephone number, and address. Make sure this information matches the listing you will be keeping exactly. Now submit these changes and verify as necessary by phone or postcard.

Leave the listings alone for the next few weeks until the analytics on the impressions and actions are the exact same, this indicates the listings have synched and become 1 listing.? To take that 1 extra step to verify they have synched, publish an update from one listings dashboard, then view both listings on google to verify of the update is present on both. Repeat this step with the other listing. Once you are certain the listings have synched you will delete the duplicate listing. Select the option “remove this listing from my Local Business Center Account”.

We seem to run into this question with many small business owner’s. Many small business owners have many facets to their business. They may have started doing one thing and have expanded their business into other avenues as well. Many of these small business owner’s want to create 2 or more separate Google Places listings for their different services. There are a few things that need to be considered first.

Does the business operate all of their different services from the same location? Use the same phone number? Currently market multiple services together? If the answer is yes to these questions 1 listing is the correct choice. If you really want to use 2 separate listings they must become separate entities. You will need 2 or more office locations ( different addresses), different phone numbers, different business names and different ad’s online and in print. To do that is a huge investment or time and resources. It also will result in the need for multiple online marketing campaigns, resulting in twice the effort and budget needed. Not to mention you take the risk of google merging your separate listings together into one or worse both listings becoming “not supported”.

When the reality is you are one business with 2 different services, you will be seen as 1 business on google and 1 single google places listing is your best bet. This approach will ensure you are marketing your business the correct way in the eyes of Google.
